Norway Massacre: The Killer’s Mind analyses of the mind and motives of Anders Breivik, the far-right extremist behind the 2011 Norway massacre which killed 77 people.

Standing as the country’s worst atrocity since World War II, the attack consisted of a car bombing outside of government headquarters in Oslo that resulted in the deaths of eight people, and a ninety-minute shooting spree in the island of Utoya that killed sixty-nine teenagers. This documentary paints a psychological profile of the self-confessed killer Breivik, while explaining how the tragic events of that fateful day unfolded.

The Imposter

The Imposter demonstrates that truth can indeed be stranger than fiction and the sinister level of deception that some people resort to. This documentary tells the true story of how a French con artist convinced a grieving Texan family that he was their child who had gone missing a few years earlier.

The story begins with the disappearance of Nicholas Barclay, a 13 year old boy from San Antonio, Texas, in June 1994. No one knew what had happened to him. Fast-forward to four years later, and his family receives a phone call from Linares, Spain. The voice on the phone claims that their son has been found. The local embassy then arranges to reunite Nicholas with his family, and this is when the real action begins. The story takes a turn for the unusual and starts to become creepy.

Nicholas’ sister was surprised to pick up a different boy. She ended up facing an unusual teenager who was changed by both age and trauma. At the time of his disappearance, Nicholas was blonde and had blue eyes, while this new Nicholas had dark hair, brown eyes, spoke with a French accent and – unbeknownst to the family – was 23 years old. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the family had welcomed a con man. Despite suspicions regarding the remarkable change in physical appearance, the new Nicholas was accepted. The Imposter underlines how innocent and naive love can get.

The Imposter goes on like a thriller. You expect the worst to happen, but the action moves on in an intelligent and engaging manner. It is actually relaxing, yet intriguing. Director Bart Layton introduces the con man to the audience during the first part of the film. He is Frederic Bourdin, a Frenchman known to Interpol for identify theft. He had a history of posing as missing teenagers, so this case is a breeze for him. At some point, the film tends to focus on deception – the deception of a family, as well as the self-deception. The truth is out of discussion.

Bourdin’s story has been told in various films and newspapers. The press dubbed him ‘The Chameleon’ because he has assumed 500 different identities over the years. People may expect the The Imposter to focus on the deceived family, but the spotlight slowly moves to Bourdin before you even realise it.

Steven Avery spent almost two decades in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. After his exoneration, he filed a multimillion-dollar lawsuit again Manitowoc County and other individuals connected to his wrongful conviction. But soon after his release he found himself behind bars again, accused and convicted of the murder of 25-year-old photographer Teresa Halbach – a crime which he maintains he wasn’t responsible for and that he had been framed by Manitowoc County in retaliation for the lawsuit brought against them.

Avery’s case was brought to the national spotlight with the airing of ‘Making a Murderer’ – a hit Netflix documentary series investigating his trial and raising questions about his guilt, and by extension, the criminal justice system. It generated significant controversy while examining the seemingly planted evidence, coerced confessions and questionable law-enforcement practises around the case.

This Investigation Discovery documentary seeks to provide a new look at the Avery case and features interviews with some of the key figures in his trial, including prosecutor Ken Kratz and Avery’s defence lawyer Jerry Buting. Is Steven Avery guilty of murder, or is he the victim of one of the country’s worst ever miscarriages of justice?

Silk Road: Drugs, Death and the Dark Web explores the online black market known as Silk Road, which was launched on the dark web in 2011. Often referred to as the ‘Amazon of illegal drugs’, it was founded by a shadowy, intelligent libertarian operating under the pseudonym ‘Dread Pirate Roberts’. Raking in tens of millions of dollars per month, it enabled its users to anonymously trade in illegal drugs and other goods using the bitcoin cryptocurrency.

Silk Road soon attracted the attention of several law enforcement agencies, including the DEA, FBI and the Secret Service, who mounted multiple investigations to uncover the mastermind behind the site. Ultimately, a young IRS tax inspector would unmask ‘Dread Pirate Roberts’ as Ross Ulbricht, a 29-year-old physics graduate from Austin who is now serving a life sentence without parole.

Kids for Cash

Kids for Cash tells the shocking story of the kids for cash scandal which came to light in 2008. Two judges, Mark Ciavarella and Michael Conahan, were found guilty of sending thousands of juveniles to detention centres for minor crimes in return from kickbacks from those operating these for-profit facilities. Many children were locked-up for trivial offenses including mocking a school principal, trespassing on an unoccupied building, and shoplifting a DVD, whereas a lesser penalty would have been more appropriate.

The documentary points out that the entire scandal occurred in front of others in positions of authority who were unwilling to step-up as whistle-blowers. It features interviews with people who were affected by Ciavarella and Conahan actions, as well as with two judges themselves.

The Jinx chronicles the life of millionaire real estate mogul Robert Durst and the three murders of which he has been a primary suspect. This documentary miniseries presents extensive interviews with people close to Durst and the murder victims, as well as with Durst himself.

Despite normally shunning media contact, Robert Durst reached out to director Andrew Jarecki exclusively after seeing All Good Things, a biopic on Durst that Jarecki had previously directed. The interviews discuss the murders of Durst’s wife Kathie, his long-time friend Susan Berman, and neighbour Morris Black, the latter of whom Durst was acquitted of murdering despite admitting to dismembering Black’s corpse.

Is Durst’s placement at the centre of three homicides over two decades a coincidence? How can a man admit to mutilating a murder victim yet not be found guilty? These are some of the questions The Jinx strives to answer.

Murder is always an uncomfortable subject, but crimes driven by hate are even more troubling. Stephen Lawrence, an 18-year-old black British man, was killed by a gang of white teenagers in a racially-motivated unprovoked attack in London, England in 1993. Incompetence, corruption and institutional racism in the police force allowed the youth’s murderers to walk free.

This documentary series recounts the miscarriage of justice that occurred in the handling of the Lawrence case and its coverage in the news media. It also focuses on Stephen’s mother Doreen, who has fought for justice for a quarter century. Her efforts garnered the attention of celebrities, politicians, and newspapers around the UK, and indeed the world. Highly emotional, provocative, and enlightening, the documentary includes never-before-aired footage and information about this nation-changing murder case.

O.J. Simpson: The Lost Confession provides an original interview that Judith Regan conducted with O.J. Simpson a decade after he was acquitted for the murder of his ex-wife and her friend. Recorded in 2006, it is said to have featured an actual ‘confession’ made by Simpson. However, there was harsh criticism of the piece at the time and News Corporation had cancelled it from ever going on television. Now with the recent airing of this two-hour special, viewers are able to find out more about what Simpson said in those recordings.

O.J. Simpson shares a ‘hypothetical’ account of the events on the night that his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman were violently murdered. The crime occurred back in 1994 and led to one of the biggest murder trials in United States history. Simpson was eventually acquitted of the charges, but the rediscovered recordings provide new insight into what really may have happened on the night of June 12, 1994.
